Trespassing Album Review

Ketika mendengar nama Adam Lambert, pikiran pertama yang terbersit di kepala mungkin “si kontestan sinting yang hobi mengenakan kostum gila dan cat kuku berkilau di panggung American Idol”. Atau, kita mungkin langsung teringat pada “lolongan” super-human-nya yang mampu menembus stratosfir dan menciptakan supernova sendiri di luar angkasa. Tiga tahun seusai berworo-wiri di panggung Idol, malang-melintang di berbagai chart musik manca negara dengan hit single “Whataya Want from Me”, serta mondar-mandir di ratusan panggung konser di segala penjuru dunia, Lambert kembali ke ranah musik pop dengan album kedua yang berjudul “Trespassing.”

And, boy, what a comeback he made!

“Trespassing” adalah album yang penuh dengan pop not-so-guilty pleasure. Album ini mengajak kita untuk bergoyang, bernyanyi, lepas kendali dalam suatu perayaan hidup yang hedonistik. Sementara album debutnya, “For Your Entertainment”, adalah ajang pembuktian dan pencarian identitas musikal, di “Trespassing” Lambert tampaknya sudah menemukan apa yang dicarinya dan mengundang kita untuk merayakan bersama. Namun kedua album ini bukanlah dua hal yang terpisah sama sekali. Lambert tidak membuang pencapaiannya di “FYE” dengan “Trespassing”.

Tema-tema yang berbau self-motivation dan ekspresi diri tetap muncul di “Trespassing”, walaupun dengan kemasan yang jauh lebih slick, matang, dan terpadu. Sementara “FYE” terkesan seperti kompilasi lusinan artis dengan berbagai gaya musik berbeda, “Trespassing” mampu menjaga integritas musikalnya dengan lebih baik, walaupun sederetan kolaborator tetap berperan besar dalam proses penciptaannya. Ini mungkin dipengaruhi oleh andil Lambert sebagai executive producer dan penulis sebagian besar lagu di album ini.

Beberapa kolaborator yang pernah berpartisipasi dalam “FYE”, seperti Dr. Luke (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry), Claude Kelly (Britney Spears, Akon, Jessie J.), dan Sam Sparro, kembali muncul di “Trespassing, bersama nama-nama besar lain seperti Pharrell Williams (N.E.R.D.), Nile Rodgers (Chic), Bruno Mars, Benny Blanco (Ke$ha, Maroon 5), dan masih banyak lagi.

Syukurlah, integritas musikal ini juga dibarengi oleh peningkatan kualitas produksi. Setiap track dipoles dengan sedemikian baiknya sehingga vokal khas Lambert tetap terdengar kuat di depan berbagai layer bunyi dan efek elektronik yang kerap menghiasi musiknya. Saran kami, gunakan headphone yang oke untuk menikmati suara Lambert dan setiap detil bunyi-bunyian di sepanjang album ini. Percayalah,it’s worth it!

Lambert sendiri menggambarkan “Trespassing” sebagai album yang personal, yang mengajak pendengarnya untuk mengintip lebih jauh lagi ke dalam hidupnya. Seperti dirinya, Lambert mengaku bahwa album ini memiliki dua sisi, “gelap” dan “terang”, yang tidak bisa dipisahkan satu sama lain. Triknya dalam menjalani hidup adalah dengan menemukan keseimbangan di antara kedua sisi ini.

Itulah yang ia lakukan dengan “Trespassing”. Bagian pertama album ini adalah sisi “terang”, penuh dengan track-track dance pop yang seakan terlahir langsung di lantai dansa, seperti “Trespassing” (title track), “Cuckoo”, “Shady”, “Never Close Our Eyes”, “Kickin’ In”, “Naked Love”, dan “Pop the Lock”. Sementara sisi “gelap” dihuni oleh track-track midtempo dan ballad seperti “Broken English”, “Underneath”, “Chokehold”, “Outlaws of Love”. “Better than I Know Myself”, single pertama yang dirilis bulan Desember lalu, menempati posisi unik sebagai jembatan antara sisi terang dan gelap tersebut. Ini dapat disimak dengan jelas pada lirik dan video klip yang hampir secara harfiah menggambarkan kedua sisi yang sering berseteru di tengah. Track yang komersil dan masuk akal dirilis sebagai single pertama karena senafas dengan hits single terbesar sepanjang karir musik Lambert, “Whataya Want from Me’, walaupun menurut kami lagu ini kurang mampu mewakili jejeran lagu-lagu “besar” yang memenuhi album ini.

Banyak lagu lain yang lebih menonjol, terutama di bagian awal album. Kalau kami boleh memutuskan, enam lagu pertama boleh saja dirilis sebagai single!

Track pertama (title track) dibuka dengan hentakan tepuk tangan, beat besutan Pharrell Williams yang mengajak kaki untuk bergoyang, dan attitude yang menunjukkan betapa Lambert menolak untuk tunduk pada “kutukan album kedua” yang diderita oleh banyak musisi menyusul kesuksesan album debut mereka. Dengan lirik seperti seperti “I don’t need no sympathy, I won’t cry and whine” atau “Wait ‘til ya get a load of me!”, Lambert seolah bersumpah untuk melepas stigma “kontestan American Idol” yang masih saja diembannya jauh setelah era reality show itu usai di hidupnya. Selain itu, bass line di lagu ini yang terdengar seperti “Another One Bites the Dust” milik Queen, pas sekali untuk mengingatkan fans bahwa band legendaris itu telah menggaetnya untuk mengisi suara Freddy Mercury di beberapa konser musim panas mereka.

“Cuckoo”, melanjutkan semangat berekspresi dari track pertama dengan mengajak kita untuk melepaskan diri dari kepenatan hidup dan merayakan kebebasan dengan musik. It’s okay to lose our minds. It’s okay to get a little crazy and cross the line. Pesan ini tersampaikan secara efektif dengan kombo dance pop dan lengkingan ala vokalis band hair-metal di bagian chorus, serta dubstep breakdown ringan di bagian bridge. Track yang cocok untuk bersanding di chart musik bersama hits-hits milik Katy Perry, Britney Spears, dan Jessie J.

“Shady” mengejutkan kami dengan bass line yang begitu funky dan groovy. Funk tidak pernah ditemui di album debutnya, tapi genre ini terdengar begitu alami dibawakan oleh Lambert. Dibantu petikan cantik gitaris legendaris Nile Rodgers, lantunan suara Sam Sparro (singer/songwriter dari Australia yang populer di ranah musik funk dengan single “Black and Gold”), serta produksi yang begitu slick, Shady merupakan salah satu track terkuat di album ini. Track ini mengingatkan kami pada musik yang seharusnya dibawakan oleh Justin Timberlake, kalau saja dia masih bermusik saat ini. It’s that good.

“I wish that this night would never be over. There’s plenty of time to sleep when we die. So let’s just stay awake until we grow older. If I had my way, we’d never close our eyes.” Ajakan ini membuka single kedua, ”Never Close Our Eyes”. Track ini aslinya ditulis oleh Bruno Mars, tapi kemudian dibawakan oleh Lambert dengan gaya vocal dan swagger-nya yang khas sampai kami lupa soal andil Mars di sini. Track dance pop yang catchy dengan polesan pop keren khas Dr. Luke, namun menurut kami masih kalah dari “Shady” dan beberapa track kuat lain di album ini.

Kejeniusan Pharrell tampil kembali di intro “Kickin’ In” yang terdengar ajaib tapi sangat asyik. Track ini dipenuhi oleh hentakan beat uptempo, dentingan cowbell, bass line yang kembali bernafas funk, dan harmonisasi vocal Lambert yang cantik. Kami berani menantang siapa pun yang mampu mendengar lagu ini tanpa bergoyang! Paling tidak, pasti menggoyangkan kepala atau kaki. Sepertinya tidak mungkin tidak goyang! Pengaruh Prince dan Michael Jackson, dua legenda yang sering diaku Lambert sebagai inspirasi musiknya, terdengar kental di sini, lengkap dengan lirik “Honey, are you up there?” yang melodinya mirip dengan “Annie, are you okay?” dari lagu “Smooth Criminal” milik MJ. Seperti “Shady”, “Kickin’ In” adalah salah satu track terbaik di album ini.

“Naked Love” dan “Pop the Lock” mengajak kita untuk terus bergoyang. Kami berharap “Naked Love” dapat dirilis sebagai single suatu saat nanti karena lagu ini begitu cocok berkumandang dari radio-radio pop di musim panas. Lagu ini mungkin bisa membawa kesuksesan yang sama bagi Lambert seperti “California Gurls” bagi Katy Perry.

Beberapa highlight lain dari album ini termasuk “Broken English” (electro pop dengan beat midtempo yang penuh erangan synth ala “Twilight Zone”, industrial dubstep breakdown, dan lengkingan vokal yang nyaris terdengar seperti Jeff Buckley versi alien) dan Chokehold (bayangkan Duran Duran dengan Simon LeBon yang tiba-tiba bisa menyanyi dalam 5 oktaf!).
Fans yang menikmati kepiawaian Lambert bernyanyi klasik, jangan khawatir tidak kebagian jatah di sini! “Underneath” adalah salah satu track ballad terbaik yang kami dengar setelah “Someone Like You” milik Adele. Ini dia suara yang sempat membuatnya dinonimasikan sebagai salah satu Best Male Pop Vocal Performance di Grammy 2011. Di balik kecintaannya terhadap dance pop dan electro, Adam Lambert adalah seorang vokalis yang berbakat. Pengaruh musik klasik dan musical theater-nya begitu bersinar di sini, ditambah lagi dengan kemampuan interpretasi lagu dan pembawaan emosinya. Kami tidak malu mengakui bahwa lagu ini membuat kami menjadi galau tak karuan. A definitely must-listen for all of you ballad lovers!

“Outlaws of Love”, yang merupakan lagu terakhir di versi reguler album Trespassing. Pop-rock ballad ini bercerita tentang perjuangan kaum minoritas yang hidup di bawah cercaan dan tentangan masyarakat. Lagu ini dapat diintrepretasikan menjadi banyak arti, tapi lirik-lirik seperti “Nowhere to grow old, we’re always on the run. They say we’ll rot in hell, but I don’t think we will. They’ve branded us enough, outlaws of love.” di tengah pergerakan sosial menuju marriage equality di Amerika Serikat, negara kelahiran Lambert, membuat kami galau kembali. Lagu ini mungkin tidak akan membawa perubahan apa pun, tapi kami berharap dapat menyentuh banyak pihak yang menentang persamaan hak asasi di bagian dunia mana pun mereka berada.

Dari ketiga track tambahan yang ditawarkan di edisi deluxe, “Runnin’” adalah track favorit kami. Track ini dimulai dengan nada rendah (sesuatu yang jarang dilakukan oleh Lambert) dan kemudian naik hingga hampir 3 oktaf (sesuatu yang sering dilakukan oleh Lambert)! Juga “Nirvana”, track mellow yang cantik, penutup edisi deluxe, pembuai emosi kita yang mungkin sudah kelelahan setelah berpesta di awal album dan sesenggrukan di “Underneath”.

Di akhir review, ijinkan kami untuk mengucapkan selamat kepada Lambert atas pencapaiannya di album ini. Lambert tidak hanya berhasil menaklukan momok kegagalan album kedua, tapi juga berhasil menunjukkan jati diri musiknya. Dia mungkin tidak menciptakan genre baru, atau melakukan sesuatu yang mengguncang industri musik, tapi “Trespassing” mampu membuktikan bahwa Lambert punya sesuatu yang lebih dari sekedar finalis kontes menyanyi di televisi. Keep on struttin’, Lambert!
